If you're running a UK limited company from home, you'll need a registered office address, which is publicly available and used in all official correspondence from Companies House and HMRC. Since you might not want to use your home address for privacy reasons (or the covenants / lease conditions prohibit you from running a business from home), several options exist for «purchasing» a registered office address service. Many company formation agents and virtual office providers offer this service as a standalone option or as part of a package. Expect to pay anywhere from £30 to £150 per year for just a registered office address, with some providers offering monthly payment options.
While a P.O. Box can be used for receiving general mail, it is not permissible as a registered office address for a UK limited company. The rules have changed many years ago and the Companies House requires a physical address.
Ideal option is - obviously - finding a real office, although it requires lots of work as the absolute cheapest office space for hire in the UK can be tricky as prices fluctuate widely based on location and amenities. However, shared workspaces or co-working spaces in less central or more rural areas generally offer the lowest rates. You might find basic office space for around £100-£200 per square meter per year in certain regions, particularly outside of major cities like London. Remember that these prices are estimates and heavily dependent on specific location and lease terms.
